Sometimes you have a hankering to go on a trip, but you don’t have the time to get on a plane. Here are some fun and local day trip ideas!

unsplash-image-__HyOHlqpBc.jpg

If you want to see some city stuff: Pikes Place Market in Seattle. You can watch them throw the fish. Eat some cheese at Beechers and get a cup o' joe at the first Starbucks. Visit the gum wall. It's as cool and as gross as it sounds.

unsplash-image-M7EGQyOEOz4.jpg

If you want to see more nature stuff: Snoqualmie Falls. It’s an easy place to walk up to. You park across the street and take a pedestrian bridge.

unsplash-image-azkB8t-l6uY.jpg

If you want to see some beautiful islands in the Puget Sound: Visit the San Juan Islands. Taking a ferry boat is part of the experience. Or you can do a whale watching tour!

unsplash-image-r1Mhr5s4ghU.jpg

If you like bridges: Deception Pass. It will seriously WOW you. It's the only non-ferry way to get to Whidbey Island, which has some cool historic military bases (as well as an active Navy base). Fort Casey is situated in Coupeville on the west side of the island. Go explore some old decommissioned military bunkers. Bring a flashlight.

If you want to see WA from above: Visit Snohomish! We have hot air balloon rides and skydiving!

unsplash-image-BZdEK9u4x20.jpg

If you're into brats and beer: Visit Leavenworth. It's a quaint Bavarian village in the mountains. This is a great town to visit in the summer or the winter. Summer offers river floats and warm weather. The wintertime offers horse-drawn sleigh rides and Christmas lights!

Snohomish is Getting a Tiny House Hotel

Nicole Serviss, RE/MAX Elite

The proposed project is for nine individual “tiny house” structures in Downtown Snohomish on the corner of Pearl and Willow. Of the 9 tiny structures, one will serve as a full-time office. Site improvements include utilities, landscaping, and parking for nine vehicles, in addition to frontage improvements on Pearl Street and Willow Avenue.

No news as to when the project will be complete, but this will be a fun addition to our little town. Currently, the only option for guests to stay is the Snohomish Inn or private VRBO and Air BnB. Looking forward to having more options!

See a copy of the site plan with the city here.

Why Vote Yes? Building for Our Students’ Future Capital Bond - February 11, 2020

The Snohomish schools are over 40 years old and, while our teachers do the best they can to provide an excellent education to our students with the facilities available to them, the buildings are dated and need replacing.

76688871_3525272857498009_2520147128366399488_o.jpg

Election day is February 11th, 2020

Passing the $470 million school bond is integral to the future success of our town.

The Snohomish schools are over 40 years old and, while our teachers do the best they can to provide an excellent education to our students with the facilities available to them, the buildings are dated and need replacing.

This bond will build six new elementary schools as well as create additional classroom space at GPHS, renovate the AIM campus, and create a larger space for the Early Learning Center.

When communities stop showing support for their schools, property values decrease and students’ educational and career prospects decrease. We don’t want that here in Snohomish.

With schools improved, students, and subsequently our community, will benefit from higher quality education and a safer learning environment. These kids grow up to be tomorrow’s local business owners and community leaders.

I have four kids in Snohomish schools, and would be beyond grateful for our community’s support in providing all students, present and future, a high-quality education. For the cost of a few cups of coffee a month, you can be a part of making Snohomish an even better place to live. Vote Yes! for Snohomish Students by February 11th, 2020.

1.png

The February 2020 bond will focus on:

Providing access and opportunity for each student

Funds from the bond will be used to replace our oldest elementary schools, so all students have the same access to an optimal learning environment no matter which school they attend.

Replaces six of our oldest elementary schools: Cascade View Elementary, Cathcart Elementary, Dutch Hill Elementary, Seattle Hill Elementary and Totem Falls Elementary. Central Primary Center and Emerson Elementary would be combined into one new K-6 facility on the Emerson site. Click here for a proposed timeline and projected project costs of the priority projects.

Add classrooms to Glacier Peak High School to minimize the reliance on portable classrooms.

Create an early learning center at the current Central Primary Center facility.

Improvements to the Parkway Campus, home to our alternative learning programs, such as AIM High School and Parent Partnership Program.

Improvements to the district’s maintenance and transportation facilities.

Enhancing school safety and security for students and schools

Funding is needed for security improvements to better ensure our children learn in a safe environment. The bond would provide upgrades to safety and security at schools throughout our district.

Safety and security upgrades are, but not limited to, exterior digital access control, internal access control, new district wide radio system, redesigned vestibules in secondary schools, new and upgrade existing camera systems, and emergency responder antennas at secondary schools.

Continuing community pride

This bond will ensure our schools continue to be a source of pride in our community. We know that the success of our students and quality schools are a reflection of our community and a source of pride.

What is the cost for the capital bond?

If approved by voters on February 11, 2020, the tax rate for the Snohomish School District's $470 million capital bond would be $0.98 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. In the Snohomish School District, the average assessed home value is $460,000. For a home assessed at $460,000, the cost would be about $450/year or $38/month. All funding approved by Snohomish voters stays local and is used to support education in the Snohomish School District.

How will this affect your property value?

Pumpkin Patches in Snohomish - Corn Mazes, Hayrides, & Other Fall Festivities

October is here and it’s time for pumpkin EVERYTHING. Pie, spice, lattes… But my favorite pumpkin of all? The porch pumpkin.

Pumpkin Patches - U-pick, Hayrides, Corn Mazes, and More!

October is here and it’s time for pumpkin EVERYTHING. Pie, spice, lattes… But my favorite pumpkin of all? The porch pumpkin. I try to go to a new pumpkin patch when I can, but it's hard not to have a few favorites. Each farm has a unique appeal. Some are more low key. Some have lots of activities. Some have a huge variety of pumpkins. Whatever your preference, there’s a pumpkin patch for you.

Bob’s Corn

10917 ELLIOTT ROAD, SNOHOMISH, WA 98296

Corn maze: 10-acre corn maze, a night maze, and a kid maze.

Pumpkin patch: over 60 varieties of pumpkins, spread over 40 acres total.

They also have a country store with items available ranging from souvenirs, comfy clothing, locally crafted gifts, and plenty of edible goodies like sweet corn, sugar pie pumpkins, zucchini, and winter squash.

TIP: The second and third weekends in October are always the busiest weekends (on every farm). If you come these weekends, pack extra patience and be prepared for lines.

Carlton Farms

630 Sunnyside Blvd SE, Lake Stevens, WA 98258

Pumpkin Patch, Wagon Rides, Farm Animals, a pumpkin cannon, a market, concessions, and Free Parking.

Find out more about pricing here.

They also have a spooky side. Night Adventures features a family friendly flashlight maze or, if you’re extra brave, their scary haunted attractions provide a variety of night adventures for the whole family: haunted swamp or the zombie hunt. Some allow flashlight, some don’t.

They have a game zone with Blinko Baseball, Barnyard Hoops, Soccer Bowling Tube Slides, and The Combine Roller Slides.

Bailey Farms

12711 Springhetti Rd, Snohomish, Washington

Probably one of your more economical options for a pumpkin patch, Bailey Farms is an excellent place to bring the family. The have a large FREE indoor play area with a hay run, rope swings, trikes, toy tractors, farm hoppers, and a sand box. There’s also hot cider and kettle corn served on the weekends.

Take a free wagon ride around the pumpkin patch, pulled by their big John Deere tractor.

Don’t forget to support this local farm when you’re doing your grocery shopping. They have a You-Pick Veggies open every day.

Veggies open for picking:
squash, pumpkins, corn, green beans, potatoes,
zucchini, beets, snow peas, cabbage, onions, chard, kale, cilantro and dill.

Craven Farms

13817 Short School Rd, Snohomish, WA 98290

First of all, they have an entire date dedicated to our Fall loving doggies. Pooches in the Patch. October 27th, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. This is where you can bring your dog with you to the pumpkin patch! How fun is that?

They have so many activities like apple cannons, a hayride to Minionville (I’ve personally done this and it’s a blast), apple slingers, face painting, 15-acre corn maze (I might have gotten lost in this one), kids adventure maze, farm animals, mini gold, photo ops, human foosball, rubber duck races, I-spy mini barn, make your own scarecrow, harvest market, gift shop, play yard, picnic tables, and more! My fingers are tired from typing all of that.

This is one of my families personal favorites. Maybe we’ll see you there?

Stocker Farms

8705 Marsh Rd, Snohomish, WA 98296

You’ll be sure to find the perfect pumpkin on their 10 acre pumpkin patch.

From the farm:

“Take instaworthy pictures in our Pumpkin Barn, antique Phone Booths, and numerous other pumpkin and sunflower arrangements on the farm! The natural scenery of the Cascade Mountains that surround our farm makes for the perfect fall photo.”

Other fun activities:

U-Pick Pumpkins, Pumpkin Barn, Corn Maze, Giant Jumping Pillow (weather permitting), Duck Races, Corn Box, Steer Roping, Tug-O-War, Tire Swings, Hayrides, Farmer Foosball, Tractor Slide, Candy Cannon, Barrell Train, Sport Ball Arcade, Hoola Hoops, Billy Bob's Blaster Alley, Pumpkin Washing Station, Pumpkin Tetherball, Smile-0-Meter, Pumpkin Tic-Tac-Toe, Jenga, Corn Hole, Gourd Tunnel, Tonka Truck Pit & Tractor, Wall Ball Games, Spookley's House, Pot-Shot Paintball & Photo-Ops!

Snohomish Bee Company: Local Raw Honey & Apiary Supplies

Adorable shop, delicious raw local honey, & friendly service!

Look, Honey, It’s SnohoBeeCo!

Adorable shop, delicious honey, friendly service!

I’m a huge raw honey fan. If you’ve never heard of the benefits of raw honey, let me tell you:

20190116_131712.jpg

1. A good source of antioxidants

2. Antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Don’t think I’m weird, but I totally used honey as a diaper cream on my kids. Yeast rashes didn’t stand a chance!

3. Immune-boosting benefits.

4. Soothe a sore throat

5. It tastes AMAZING!

I try to shop local whenever I can. SnohoBeeCo makes that super easy. They’re over on Maple in between the Aquatic Center and the library. The building is easy to miss though. My guess is you’ve probably driven past it before and never even noticed it was there.

Don’t let the outside fool you. This shop is adorable. Hex shelves line the walls displaying beeswax candles and every size imaginable of honey jars. (pssstt my favorite flavor is the blueberry honey)

They are super friendly and helpful. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about anything to do with bees (honey bees or mason bees), honey, candle making, etc., you should check out their classes.

Highlights of Snohomish bee company

✅ Excellent source of local raw honey

✅ Fair prices (I didn’t feel like I was paying the small business price for high quality honey)

✅ Friendly service

I think their mission statement says it all…

To provide high-quality beekeeping supplies, bees, beeswax and of course fresh, local raw honey to those passionate about bees.

Dairyland Christmas Trees

There are so many Christmas Tree options around here. Here’s a peak at one of them.

Dairyland Christmas Tree Farm

Not U-Cut, but just as fun!

There are so many Christmas Tree options around here. Here’s a peak at one of them.

  • Free hot chocolate, coffee, and cider!

  • Huge gift shop with tons of quality and local made gifts.

  • Free craft projects for the kids. My kids made candy cane ornaments and wrote letters to Santa.

  • Warm firepit outside and a warm wood stove inside.

  • Photo’s with Santa. He was legit! I swear it was the real guy.

  • Haywire Brewing is right there. Grab a drink while you shop for your tree! Then sit down and eat some good food while they load the tree onto your car.

  • Trees are pre-cut, which was a bit of a bummer for me because the cutting of the tree is kind of a tradition, but we got over it fast when we found our perfect tree.

  • Competitively priced and totally gorgeous and fresh trees. Mine lasted 4 weeks and still looked freshly cut after new years!

Add a bit of soda or syrup (I use vanilla syrup that I put in my coffee) to your tree water once a week to keep your tree looking fresh for longer!

Snowflake Lane: Tips, Secrets, & What NOT to Do

I made all the mistakes so you don’t have to.

Snowflake Lane in Bellevue

The Ultimate Christmas Experience: And It’s Free!

My family decided we wanted to experience Snowflake lane for real this year. We, accidentally, caught the end of the parade last year, and I knew the kids would love it.

Well, as you know, December is a busy time of year! Between all the Christmas shopping (thank goodness for Amazon), the Christmas shows and plays that your kids are in, and the holiday parties, there is hardly a moment to spare.

It was the weekend before Christmas before we knew it… BAM. The LAST opportunity to see the parade.

Check the weather: 90% chance of rain. Perfect! We’re tough. We’ll bring umbrellas. It might even keep the crowds down.

You hear parking can be a nightmare. We have a solution for that too! The parade didn’t start until 7pm. We decided we’d do some last minute Christmas shopping in Bellevue Square and go out to dinner before the parade. Perfect!

This is how the day REALLY went down.

✅ We arrived early afternoon and found excellent parking in the Bellevue Square sparking garage

❌Walking around the mall was literally shoulder to shoulder. I’m lucky I didn’t lose a child.

❌The fastest restaurant wait time was 90 minutes.

✅While the line was 45 minutes long at Panda Express, they totally rocked it and got people through the line as fast as they could.

❌Because getting food took longer than expected we didn’t get to the street early enough.

❌The rain hindered no one. It was POURING.

❌Adults stood in front of children, making it impossible for my kids to see.

✅Random stranger gave us his umbrella! There are kind people out there!

✅It’s not really real snow falling from the sky. It’s soap! It was definitely magical.

❌I wish I could tell you how the parade was, but I couldn’t see very well.

Tips, Tricks, and Secrets to have a Magical Experience

  1. Don’t procrastinate. Head to a parade early in December on a weeknight. I wen’t on a Saturday night…. NEVER AGAIN!

  2. Arrive by 5pm and get good parking

  3. Don’t plan on eating dinner there unless you make a reservation

  4. Plan to be cold and wear rain gear

  5. Head to the street early to claim a good spot

  6. Have a meetup spot in case you get separated

Will I Go Back Next Year?

Of course I will. Yes, I did it all wrong. But, I know what NOT to do and will make seeing this parade a family tradition. I hope you do too!
